The largest land battle in the history of mankind. Lasted from 17 July 1942 to 2 February 1943. After a counter-offensive near Moscow German troops have been thrown to the West and Hitler had decided to capture the strategically important South and from there to move to the capital. At first, the enemy had advanced to Stalingrad, but then the Soviet forces managed to win several decisive victories and the Germans were forced out of the space between the Volga and the don (the largest fighting unfolded in Stalingrad). The main achievement of the battle was the loss of the Wehrmacht the advantages of their positions and the protection of the German troops coming from the South oil. Total losses on both sides totaled more than two million people.
