The ceremony of lighting the Olympic flame was held at traditions in Olympia (Greece) at the birthplace of the first Olympics. Then the torch was brought by relay runners to Athens, where a special plane was sent to Moscow. Then he was driven through the major cities of Russia (mainly on buses, trains and planes, but there were unconventional ways, such as reindeer). In cities organized multi-kilometer relay, so that the residents could see the fire (the torch was carried by famous personalities or athletes). The Olympic flame was also taken on the icebreaker to the North pole in a submersible to the bottom of lake Baikal and visited the ISS and even went into space (torch without burning).
The torch was presented to the public on 14 January 2013. The design is made in the form of a feather Heat-birds, burning was carried out using a gas cylinder hidden inside. The torch of the Olympic flame was painted in red color, Paralympic blue. At the top are the emblems of the games, in the technique of incrustation. The torches were made of aluminum alloy and weighing 1.8 kg, height - 95 cm, greatest width of 16 cm was manufactured 14 thousand Olympic torches and 1 thousand Paralympic. Each participant could leave the torch itself, which was given a special cover.
