depicts two Marines in the time of the attack (one holding a rifle, the other flag) in the background a seascape with a warship and the city on the horizon. The left and the medal "gold Star". Below in a semicircle the word "НОВОРОССИЙСК"
The obverse and reverse sides have a protruding on the circumference of the piping.

The coin is issued on 4 may 2000 in honor of the 55th anniversary of the Victory. The series consists of 7 coins, each one dedicated to one of the hero cities. In 2017, the series was complemented by two more coins (Kerch and Sevastopol).
Novorossiysk along with Sevastopol and Odessa during the great Patriotic war held the line against the Nazis from the Black sea. Despite the capture of most of the city; the rest remained under Soviet command and for a long time resisted, which led to the liberation of the entire black sea coast of the Caucasus. Novorossiysk was awarded the title hero city in 1973.
